Momentive Specialty Chemicals Introduces New EPIKURE™ Curing Agent for ‘2K Waterborne, Zinc-Rich Epoxy Primers at European Coatings Show 2011
Columbus, Ohio (March 29, 2011) – Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc. is introducing a new specialty EPIKURE™ Curing Agent for ‘2K Waterborne, Zinc-Rich Epoxy Primers that, when used with Momentive’s EPI-REZ™ Waterborne Resins, sets a new standard in a segment where solvent-borne coatings dominate.
The new EPIKURE™ Curing Agent 8538-Y-68 is an amine curing agent that makes the performance of this waterborne system truly competitive with traditional solvent-borne epoxy/polyamides.
Significant advances in the performance of waterborne epoxy coatings that meet stringent VOC regulations have enabled replacement of solvent-borne coatings in high performance coating applications. When appropriately formulated, Momentive’s waterborne epoxy systems provide superior corrosion resistance with low VOCs.
The superior performance of Momentive’s NewGen™ binder system has been extended using a new curing agent technology that is suitable for development of zinc-rich primer formulations. This innovative new technology allows a 50% reduction of the VOC content.
At the same zinc content, the corrosion protection of a ‘2K, waterborne zinc-rich primer based on this curing agent with Momentive’s EPI-REZ™ Waterborne Resins is equal to, or better than, a commercial zinc-rich primer based on a traditional solvent-borne epoxy / polyamide binder.
The zinc-rich component, based on EPIKURE™ Curing Agent 8538-Y-68, demonstrates good shelf stability and is stable to hydrogen out-gassing. There is also no significant out-gassing when the resin and curing agent components are combined. These waterborne zinc-rich primers have good flexibility, are easy to mix, easy to apply and simple to clean. The working pot life is a minimum of 4 hours when used with Momentive’s EPI-REZ™ Waterborne Resins.
